Future of Congress in Kerala

By: S.Sanalkumar is one of the prominent lawyers in the high court of Kerala.

Kerala Provincial Congress Committee (KPCC’s original expansion) was formed on January 30th, 1921. It was following the resolution of the Indian National Congress to form regional committees based on linguistic lines. Malabar of Madras Presidency and Princely States of Travancore and Cochin had their common language Malayalam and thus for them, Kerala Provincial Congress Committee was formed in 1921 at Ottappalam.

But later, in 1938, the Haripura Session of Indian National Congress decided to dissociate from the activities of the Congress Units functioning in the Princely States. This paved the way for the formation of the Travancore State Congress, Cochin Congress Party, Prajamandalam etc. It is interesting also when history says about other Congress outfits like Democratic Congress Party-led Mannam and R.Sanker, Travancore Tamilnadu Congress Party. Later, after the formation of United Kerala, the present Kerala Pradesh(not ‘provincial ‘as stood originally)Congress Committee slowly evolved to start functioning for United Kerala.

In 1938, AICC decided to dissociate from its princely State units as its national concerns did not find resonance in princely regional units. Now it is time for the call for a turn of history. The existence of the present KPCC is jeopardised by the interests of the national leadership of Congress. The Congress in Kerala is an anti-Marxist platform of all social groups..the alliance with Communists by national leadership is threatening its existence in Kerala..reducing it day by day to an insignificant player in Kerala..the Anti-Marxist mass increasingly starts aligning with other mighty and potential political parties to take on Communists..some have reconciled themselves with the idea of truce with Communists seeing no potential rival force.

For the mass under the banner of Congress to survive here as a platform of anti-communists, snap all its ties with AICC and go back to the golden days of State Congress as a regional party with a catchphrase like Trinamool, YSR Congress etc. Or else there is going to be no political future for this bunch of people...
